Body Mind Connection
Just as the leg and arm refer to different parts of the same body, the body and mind refer to different parts of the same whole. Every thought you think and every emotion you feel is also an experience of the body. Separation of the body and the mind is only useful and possible when describing the function of each aspect for the sake of definition. When forgetting about the body's mental and emotional connections, one can rarely recognize the creative role that the mind plays in all disease processes. Herein lays the basic principle of the holistic model of wellness.
One can teach the mind to create a reality different than that from which it currently operates. This new thought process allows the body to learn to respond in ways that are unlike previous experiences. If the previous thought patterns were negative and pessimistic, the wellness quotient will be low, and an illness is eminent. If the wellness quotient is high, the state of health will be positive, and healing from a current illness more probable, or a possible future illness minimized or diverted.
In the 1890s, over one hundred years ago, Ivan Pavlov showed that a physiological reaction could be induced by an idea. Dogs were taught to salivate at the sound of a bell. In the early 1900s, W. B. Cannon showed that when animals were restrained from running from danger, their digestive systems were seriously disrupted. In the 1940s, Hans Selye found that physical illnesses and emotional distress produced physiological reactions that could cause physical harm.
Today, studies have shown that the brain and nervous system are fully integrated with the rest of the body. They have further shown that there is a connection between the nervous system and the immune system, that nerve cells connect directly to the organs of the immune system, that stress affects the immune system, that the nervous system and the immune system speak the same chemical language, and that social and psychological factors are associated variations in illness and health. A lack of social support is statistically associated with illness as strongly as cigarette smoking or a high cholesterol level is.
