David’s Story

Finding stability through compassionate, structured care.

Before Treatment

A Cycle of Instability

When David (name changed for privacy) first arrived at InnerWisdom, his life was in crisis. His untreated mental health condition had led to medication noncompliance, causing his symptoms to spiral. He struggled to remain grounded in reality and became obsessed with consuming large amounts of water, believing it would heal his body.

This compulsion resulted in severe water intoxication, landing him in the hospital. While receiving emergency medical care, it became clear that his struggles extended beyond the physical. The hospital recognized his need for intensive psychiatric treatment and referred him to InnerWisdom.

At the time, David had no contact with his family, including his ex-wife and children. He was also struggling to process the loss of his parents, a grief he had been unable to face without his support system.

His goal was simple but profound: to stay on his medication and learn to cope with his grief in a healthier way.

Choosing InnerWisdom

A Support System That Listened

David was referred to InnerWisdom’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) by the hospital that treated him for water intoxication. While he had tried treatment before, he found InnerWisdom’s holistic, patient-centered approach to be different.

He began to develop his newfound support system through the guidance of compassionate clinicians, welcoming staff, and structured worksheets that allowed him to thoroughly process his current struggles.

David also noted that the staff treated him with kindness and respect, something he had not always felt in previous treatment programs.

Treatment & Progress

Learning to Manage Triggers

David entered InnerWisdom’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), which provided the daily structure and clinical support he needed to stabilize.

His treatment plan combined:

  • Solution-Focused Therapy – Helping him identify and process his grief in a way that felt manageable.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Teaching him how to shift his mindset and break harmful patterns.
  • Mindfulness Techniques – Giving him practical tools to redirect obsessive thoughts and regain control.

Through the WellPrint Progress Tracker, David saw measurable improvements across several key areas:

  • Mental Health – He became medication compliant, which reduced impulsive behaviors and helped stabilize his mood.
  • Emotional Health – He developed healthier coping strategies for his grief, allowing him to develop a clearer path to identify his own goals.
  • Sense of Purpose – With the support of therapists, he set long-term goals for rebuilding his relationships and maintaining stability.
  • Social Well-Being – While still working on rebuilding his support system, he became more engaged in group therapy and built strong relationships within the InnerWisdom community.
  • Physical Health – With better emotional regulation, his compulsions lessened, and he was able to maintain a balanced daily routine.

The biggest change I saw in him was his ability to advocate for himself. He learned to recognize his triggers and take action before things got out of control. That’s a major step toward long-term stability.

Life After Treatment

A Continued Journey

David successfully graduated from PHP, but his journey didn’t end there. He experiences seasonal depression, which can make certain times of year particularly difficult. Instead of allowing his symptoms to spiral, he now advocates for himself and returns to InnerWisdom for additional support when he feels vulnerable. This self-awareness is a testament to his growth.

He often expresses gratitude to the therapists who helped him during his lowest points, acknowledging the patience and dedication they showed in his care.

They didn’t just treat me like a patient. They took the time to understand me, to help me through my worst moments, and to give me the tools to move forward.

I’m still healing, but now I know I’m not alone.
