Fragments of Becoming

This mural concept is a visual journey of self-realization, identity, and struggle. In the center, a white man and a black woman stand back-to-back. They represent both diversity and being connected, but also that each have their own path. Their pensive facial expressions show deep thought and the quiet strength of reflection and resilience.

Fragments of shattered glass explode outward from them, carrying layered meanings: the fragility of our humanity, the barriers and ceilings we must break through, and the beauty found even in brokenness. The iridescent shards shine and catch the light, showing how we can grow from painful challenges.

A glowing butterfly bursts through the glass, showing transformation, new beginnings, and the wisdom gained through hardship.
Surrounding the figures are leaves and flowers inspired by the Garden of Eden. The plants in the garden are full of meaning: lotus flowers show strength and rising above problems, morning glories show a fresh start every day, and proteas show change and being true to yourself.

There are also hidden symbols, a serpent and an apple, that remind us about temptation, knowledge, and the complexity of the human journey.

The overall composition carries both dark and light, a tension between despair and hope. It tells a story of pushing through struggle, breaking barriers, and transforming into a truer, stronger self. It’s a celebration of the beauty within fragility and the strength that comes from embracing every piece of who we are.
