Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

2-3 day/wk mental health program for focused treatment that fits your lifestyle.

Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) right for you?

  • What it is

IOP is a structured, part-time treatment program that provides strong clinical support while letting patients stay engaged in their daily lives. It bridges the gap between traditional therapy and full-time care, offering the structure needed to build real, lasting stability.

  • Who it’s for

IOP is for patients who need more than traditional outpatient therapy but don’t require the full-day intensity of PHP. It’s ideal for those stepping down from PHP or stepping up from traditional therapy to avoid hospitalization.

  • Structure and duration

IOP meets 2-3 days a week for several sessions a day. Patients receive an individualized mix of group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, and skill-building. It provides enough structure to create momentum in recovery while allowing patients to practice what they learn in real time – at work, at school, and in their relationships.

IOP at InnerWisdom Includes

Group Therapy

Group therapy is the foundation of treatment, helping patients connect with others, gain insight into their challenges, and practice skills in a safe, supportive space. Group sessions may include topic such as:

  • Cognitive Restructuring: Learning how thoughts influence emotions and behaviors, and developing healthier thinking patterns.
  • Relapse Prevention: Identifying triggers and high-risk situations to prevent setbacks.
  • Anger & Stress Management: Practicing techniques to handle emotions in constructive ways.
  • Grief & Loss Support: Navigating the emotional impact of significant life changes.
  • Healthy Relationships & Social Skills: Building stronger communication and conflict-resolution strategies.

1

Individual Therapy

Patients meet one-on-one with a licensed therapist to work through personal challenges, set and refine treatment goals, and develop individualized coping strategies.

2

Medication Management & Psychiatric Care

Medication plays an important role in successful treatment. Our psychiatric team provides:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to determine the best course of care.
  • Medication monitoring and adjustments to ensure effectiveness.
  • Education on medication management and side effects so patients feel informed and empowered in their treatment.

3

Life Skills & Wellness Training

Mental health care goes beyond therapy – daily habits, stability, and real-world skills also matter. Our treatment includes training in:

  • Daily living skills: Time management, organization, and goal-setting.
  • Financial literacy: Budgeting, bill management, and planning for the future.
  • Vocational skills: Workplace readiness, employment support, and communication skills.

4

Expressive & Alternative Therapies

Not all healing comes from talk therapy. Patients may also engage in:

  • Nutritional education: Understanding how diet impacts mood and energy levels.
  • Exercise & movement sessions: Using physical activity to support mental health.
  • Self-care & relaxation techniques: Teaching mindfulness, guided relaxation, and breathing
  • Art Therapy: Using creative expression to explore emotions.
  • Music Therapy: Engaging with rhythm and sound for emotional release.
  • Journaling & Reflective Practices: Encouraging self-awareness and personal insight.

Our Approach To IOP

At InnerWisdom, we go beyond symptom management and focus on building long-term stability and real-world progress.

  • Holistic

Mental health isn’t just about therapy. We help many patients navigate real-life challenges like housing, transportation, and food security so they can fully focus on recovery.

  • Structured, yet flexible

Any of our patients come from unstable or unstructured backgrounds, and structure is key to healing. At the same time, we recognize that everyone’s journey is different, and we adapt care to meet each patient’s unique needs.

  • Measurable

Our WellPrint® Progress Tracker ensures that treatment isn’t just about talking—it’s about setting clear, measurable goals across mental, physical, emotional, and social health.

  • Professional

We are not a corporate facility where patients are just numbers. Our small, expert team takes the time to truly understand and support each individual.

You may be wondering...

  • How do I know if I need IOP?

IOP is ideal for people who:

✔ Need ongoing support but do not require full-day treatment.
✔ Are transitioning from PHP or inpatient hospitalization.
✔ Want a flexible treatment plan that fits into their daily life.

  • How long does IOP last?

Treatment varies based on individual needs, but most patients attend for several weeks to a few months before stepping down to traditional outpatient care.

  • Can patients work or go to school while in IOP?

Yes! IOP is designed to fit around your schedule, offering therapy multiple times per week while allowing time for daily responsibilities.

  • How is IOP different from PHP?

IOP is less intensive than PHP, typically involving treatment 3 to 5 days per week instead of full-day care. It is a step down from PHP and provides continued support while encouraging greater independence.

  • Does insurance cover IOP?

Many insurance plans cover some or all of IOP treatment. Our team can verify your benefits and help you navigate the process.

  • Can you help with transportation?

We understand that transportation can be a barrier to care. InnerWisdom helps coordinate transportation solutions for eligible patients, including ride assistance programs and community resources to ensure you can get to treatment reliably and stress-free.
